WOLF MONITORING IN THE MONTI SIBILLINI NATIONAL PARK – WOLFNET 2.0 PROJECT ‘COORDINATED MEASURES FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE APENNINE WOLF’
The Monti Sibillini National Park, as part of the WOLFNET 2.0 project ‘Coordinated measures for the protection of the Apennine wolf’, entrusted the Institute of Applied Ecology with monitoring the presence of the species within the protected area.
The project started in December 2019 and ended in May 2022 and the main objectives were:
- Accurate estimation of the presence and spatial arrangement of the herds in the most suitable areas for the species in the park area ;
- Satellite monitoring and subsequent assessment of the spatial use of some individuals belonging to different herds, as far apart as possible (to increase the probability that they belong to different herds the wolf’s impact on livestock and spatial estimation of the potential impact risk.
For the achievement of the above mentioned objectives, the main actions carried out were tions were:
- Capture of wolves for GPS/G SM collars;
- Intensive monitoring with video traps and wolf howling
- Analysis of predation on domestic livestock livestock
- Analysis of the vulnerability of livestock farms in the Park;
- Food ecology analysis of captured wolves by means of location cluster analysis GPS,
The activities of the IEA also involved the analysis of deer distribution through the use of phototraps and the organisation and implementation of the census of red deer at the lure, which included the preparation and training of volunteer operators selected by the Park
