PILOT PROJECT FOR WOLF DAMAGE PREVENTION IN LAZIO REGION
The Project had the following objectives
- support to the Natural Capital, Parks and Protected Areas Directorate in supervising and coordinating the implementation of the pilot actions;
- support to AAPP in assessing the technical-economic feasibility and suitability, planning, supervision, implementation and monitoring of the actions at the selected pilot farms;
- technical support (through the figure of the ‘company tutor’) in order to improve the capacity of the companies in the field of prevention, so as to maximise the effectiveness of the measures adopted in the long term, and to make the companies autonomous in the choice of prevention measures, thus improving the effectiveness of the interventions.
- training and dissemination activities for livestock farm operators to improve their knowledge of good prevention practices;
- training and field involvement activities during inspections for protected areas operators to improve their ability to support farms and their knowledge of best prevention practices.
Twenty-two pilot companies were involved, located within the protected areas of the Lazio Region, which were equipped, following an initial assessment, with ad hoc prevention tools such as protection dogs, fixed and mobile fences, and video surveillance systems.
