SURVEY ON THE PERCEPTION OF THE WOLF IN THE VEIO REGIONAL PARK

The Veio Regional Park Authority and the Institute of Applied Ecology promoted a survey in 2019 to assess the state of knowledge of the populations regarding the presence of the wolf within the Park, their perception of the species, with a small sample of people belonging to different interest groups, in order to build a knowledge base on which to develop a communication strategy to manage the inhabitants’ reaction.
The survey involved the collection of information through

  • telephone interviews for a quantitative analysis, stratified by gender and age according to the distribution of the adult population in the municipalities concerned
  • face-to-face interviews with local stakeholders for a qualitative analysis.

The stakeholders were chosen from among breeders, tourism operators, environmentalists, administrators, hunters, veterinarians, local police, politicians, starting with some suggestions from the Park Authorities and continuing with a snowball approach.

An analysis of the information gathered reveals a general lack of awareness on the part of most of those interviewed concerning the presence of the wolf in the Park, and a request for technical and economic support for breeders.
In this regard, general guidelines were proposed for the development of an information campaign to be carried out in the Park’s territory, with a proactive approach and the fundamental support of the Lazio Region administration.
